Nyakim Gatwech: The Queen of Black rewriting conventional beauty with her resplendent pixels of Melanin, Every Girl Africa

Nyakim Gatwech – Queen of the Dark, a South Sudanese descent, and African American model is one beauty that has stirred our hearts with her color and the way she represents it, sharing it enthusiastically with the world, and so elegantly.

The stigma of colorism has negatively impacted the self-esteem of many young black girls and women. But for Nyakim, her dark skin helped her give birth to a thriving modeling career with a net worth of $4 million.

The 24-year old model widely referred to as the Queen of the Dark, was born in Ethiopia to South Sudanese parents who were forced to constantly move to different places as refugees due to conflict in the country. When she immigrated to the United States, to Buffalo, New York, she had to adjust to a new culture that came with its challenges.

Very few people celebrated her color. Infact, they teased her, called her names, and ‘advised’ her to change the color of her skin. Some recommended discoloring creams for her to use.

Could you imagine? A skin as dark as this, so rare, so beautiful!

In 2016, an Uber driver suggested she bleach her skin, implying that her deep complexion was nothing to love. She only laughed at his statement, unfortunate for him that she had fully embraced her striking appearance as it is.

“My chocolate is elegant. So is what I represent… A nation of warriors.”

“I was fine with my self-esteem and I started being torn down by society, and I started looking at myself,” she said in an interview with CBS News. “Do I blend in with what the society considered to be beautiful?”

Nyakim moved to Minneapolis as a teenager and remained for high school and college. It was there she walked with more confidence and blossomed, realizing the beauty in her features. She is now a professional model celebrated by many that love her stunning photoshoots and her dark complexion. According to Celebrity How, her net worth is $4 million from endorsements and brand ambassador deals with major companies like Fashion Nova.

Nyakim Gatwech is the lady who’s got the ‘darkest’ skin in the world. She is the one who’s teaching people not to be afraid of the dark. With her deeply pigmented skin and fierce determination, Nyakim is rewriting conventional beauty with resplendent pixels of melanin and encouraging others to do the same.

The 24-year-old African model and fashion icon has no shame for her melanin. She is not only an advocate for diversity in the fashion industry but also a voice for Black rights around the world.

“Black is bold, black is beautiful, black is gold… Don’t let American standards damage your African soul.”

“You are beyond beautiful and the love I have for you is unconditional because you are me. Let’s show the world how beautiful and intelligent we are apart from just being dark skinned”

Though she still receives discouraging messages every now and then, Nyakim refuses to give up her radiant self-love.

“She is black girl [excellence], she is me and I am her. My beautiful niece is the reason I do what I do so she doesn’t look at herself in the mirror and see anything else but beauty,” said Nyakim. “In a world that tries every day to tell us we’re not the beauty standard, I remind her and all the little black girls out there that they are drop-dead gorgeous, intelligent, brave outstanding and much more.”

“My skin absorbs the suns rays and my hair defies gravity. Now you can’t tell me I’m not magical!”
